A shia Islamist political party and militant group. Hezbollah are widely believed to be funded by Iran in order to spread a revolutionary form of Islam. Since 2012, it has allied itself with the Syrian government in the Syrian civil war. In Lebanon, Hezbollah is one of the most powerful political parties after fighting off Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during 2006. Its paramilitary wing is more powerful than the Lebanese Army. It has seats in the Lebanese government, provides social sciences and has a media presence. To some extent, Hezbollah is a ‘state within a state.’ The US, the EU and most members of the Arab League consider Hazbollah a terrorist organisation. Russia, Lebanon and Iran however do not view Hezbollah as a terrorist group.
