A fundamentalist political party with the aim of liberating Palestine from Israeli occupation. Founded in 1987 around the time of the first intifada, Hamas seeks to establish an Islamic state in the region (including the West Bank, Gaza and Israel). In 2006, it became the de facto governing authority within Gaza. In response to their electoral victory, the Quartet made future foreign assistance conditional on non-violence and the recognition of the state of Israel. Hamas rejected these demands which then led to economic sanctions from Israel. Since then, there have been a number of military conflicts with Israel (such as 2021).
