A disputed area within the Middle East. The Golan Heights was captured from Syria by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War. This de facto occupation has been described as an annexation and condemned by a UN Security Council resolution. The Golan Heights has been administered as a part of Israel since 1981, although the eastern third is under the control of the Syrian Arab Republic. In 2019, Donald Trump declared that the US recognised the Golan Heights as part of Israel. However, the European Union does not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the disputed territory.
