Gaza strip

A densely-populated territory claimed in a legal sense by the State of Palestine (along with the West Bank). In 2006, the electoral success of Hamas provoked an Israeli-led economic and political boycott. Since the battle of Gaza in 2007, it has been governed by the fundamentalist group Hamas. In a de facto sense, the state of Israel also restricts the movement of people residing within Gaza. The population are unable to leave or enter the Gaza strip, nor are they allowed to trade with the outside world. Israel reserves the right to enter Gaza on a military basis. It is widely accepted that Israel is an occupying force within the Gaza strip.
